The book opens on Martin O’Callaghan Limited mid summer of 1976 when Martin O’Callaghan branched out on his own and began life working for himself as a sole trader, he did this for several years, picking up work where he could with his one JCB. Martin was later joined in business by his wife Gobnait and soon after by employees (many of whom are still with the Company to the present day or at least pop in from time to time) and an ever expanding fleet of plant machinery. Over time before the business expanded substantially and grew to a stage where company incorporation was inevitable. The Company was incorporated in February 1988 by Martin O’Callaghan and Gobnait O’Callaghan and grew largely during the 90s and into the 00s.

Some notable contracts in the formative years which helped put the Company on the map included being awarded Main Contractor status for the following projects:

  1. South Ring Road (Stage 6) in April 1994
  2. Whitegate Village Sewage Scheme in 1995
  3. Marina Commercial Park, Monahan Road, Cork in 1997
  4. Frankfield Service Station Kinsale Road Cork in 1997
  5. Upjohn (Pfixer), Little Island Cork (1997) main contract for treatment plant, tank farm, roadways and car parks at their Little Island manufacturing plant.

In or around 1999 Martin O’Callaghan Limited was awarded from Cork City Council the contract (and main contractor status) for the redesignation and redevelopment of the former Kinsale Road Landfill into an amenity and development area. The Company were awarded successive subsequent contracts and in all were carrying out works in here continuously for approximately ten years.

The Company has been awarded and completed contracts right across the breadth of the construction industry some examples include road and infrastructure upgrades, works on behalf of utility providers (to include Irish Water), development of business parks, industrial estates, factory units, car parks, works on behalf of property developers.

Martin O’Callaghan sadly passed away in March 2018 but his influence and methodology is strongly felt and followed by the experienced management team and employees currently in place.

The Company is registered with the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) and is experienced in all aspects of civil engineering works (to include road construction) and possess an experienced site staff who are all CSCS certified and trained.

The Company owns it own plant and has immediate access to large range of equipment to assist in the execution of any contract. The Company is fully insured by way of Contractors All Risk, Employers & Public Liability and have access to contract Guarantee Bond facilities.

The company has a team of fully qualified and highly respected civil engineers directly employed who assist and supervise in the completion of any works contract undertaken by the Company.
